In honor of Father’s Day, let’s celebrate one of the coolest dads on television.
Harry Wilson, the patriarch of the Wilson family on “90210,” was #36 on a recent list of television’s 50 coolest dads. Played by Rob Estes (pictured), Harry moved his family from Kansas to his original hometown of Beverly Hills to take care of his mother in the CW’s recent spin-off of the original “Beverly Hills, 90210.”.jpg)
Harry has two children with his wife, Debbie (played by Lori Loughlin): Annie (played by Shenae Grimes) and adopted son, Dixon (played by Tristan Wilds). It was also revealed during the show’s first season that Harry also fathered a son, Sean (played by Josh Henderson), from a previous fling with Tracy Clark (played by Christina Moore).
As principal of West Beverly Hills High School, Harry is pretty involved in the lives of his children. He and Debbie try to spend family time with their kids, such as bowling night at Lucky Strike lanes, but understand when their kids want to spend time with their friends.
In addition to the coolest-dad-list honor, Estes, along with Loughlin, is nominated in the category of favorite TV Parental Unit at the upcoming Teen Choice Awards. (For voting details, click here.)
One dad who didn’t make the list of coolest dads is original “Beverly Hills, 90210,” patriarch Jim Walsh (played by James Eckhouse). Jim was married to Cindy (played by Carol Potter), and father to twins Brandon (played by Jason Priestley) and Brenda (played by Shannen Doherty). He uprooted his teenagers from Minnesota to Beverly Hills, but his busy career and problems adjusting to life in Beverly Hills seemed to create some tension in the Walsh house. In fact, most of his communication with Brenda was in argumentative form.
Not to say that Brenda was an angel by any means. When she snuck across the border to Mexico with boyfriend Dylan McKay (played by Luke Perry), the fuse in Jim exploded and their relationship was never the same again. Harry, on the other hand, seemed to handle it a lot better when Annie went on a secret date to San Francisco via private airplane on the new series. So perhaps his inability to “lose his cool” is why Harry is among the coolest TV dads.
